This SENDcast Session will be available to view from 24th February 2026
Interoception and its impact on self regulation & mental wellbeing
Interoception is the body’s ability to notice and interpret internal signals such as hunger, thirst, heart rate, breathing, and emotional cues. It underpins self regulation, emotional awareness, and mental wellbeing, helping individuals recognise how they feel and what they need in order to respond appropriately. When interoceptive awareness is reduced, pupils in the classroom may struggle to identify emotions, appear dysregulated, or find regulation tools less effective.
Ali Neal is a specialist Occupational Therapist who regularly presents at conferences and events. In this session she explores interoception and its crucial role in self regulation and mental wellbeing. The training highlights how difficulties noticing internal body signals can affect behaviour and limit the effectiveness of popular regulation tools such as the Zones of Regulation. Ali also shares practical strategies to help staff support pupils’ regulation within everyday classroom practice.
