A step-by-step guide to Adaptive Teaching
Adaptive Teaching can help create a responsive, supportive, and effective educational environment that meets the needs of all students. It helps foster a culture of continuous improvement and personalised learning, leading to better educational outcomes and a more inclusive learning experience. Most schools make a commitment to adapting teaching but are not explicit in terms of how this should be achieved.
SEND Consultant and Author, Abigail Gray provides a step-by-step guide to Adaptive Teaching your school can use to help train Teachers and TAs to meet the needs of pupils with SEND. This session uses the DR GOPTA agenda as a scaffold to support education professionals to reflect on and develop their own practice. The mnemonic represents seven important considerations for adapting teaching – Dialogue, Resources, Grouping, Opportunities, Pace, Task, and Assessment. Abigail explains how this approach can help educators to better support all of their learners, including those with SEND.

Some excellent ideas, thank you. However, for class teachers who are struggling to meet all the differing needs in their classroom, it has to be acknowledged that it’s exhausting both mentally and physically. It’s a perfect storm for SEND: surge in identified complex needs, very little specialist provision capacity and no funding. Add to this the demands of progress and attainment and delivering the National Curriculum, not to mention Ofsted – is it any wonder that teachers are finding the going super tough and many falling by the wayside. Adaptive teaching in theory is a fabulous pedagogy – I’m not sure that weary colleagues are up for all the thinking that is required to put it into practice.

Thank you so much for a truly informative webinar. I think it is essential to know each child thoroughly – we owe it to the pupils in our care. Essential too to continually review and revise how we try to meet these needs. I think it is the only way forward – possibly reviewing all the interventions taking place outside of the classroom.
