Maths anxiety is a feeling of intense fear, worry, or stress when faced with mathematical tasks or situations that involve numbers. It is not simply disliking maths – it’s a psychological response that can interfere with a person’s ability to learn, perform, or even think clearly about maths. Maths anxiety can affect anyone, regardless of age or ability, and is common among students, adults, and even professionals.
Rob Jennings is a maths teacher, learning difficulty specialist, and co-founder of the Dyscalculia Network. He believes that maths anxiety can be overcome – if a learner experiences a nurturing teaching experience, is able to recognise and control their anxiety, and accepts that maths requires practice rather than an inbuilt ability. About the Creator
Rob Jennings / Co-Founder, Dyscalculia Network
Rob Jennings has over 15 years of experience teaching young people with special needs. Over the past 10 years, he has focused specifically on helping children struggling with maths working in both independent and state schools. He is Co-Founder of The Dyscalculia Network, an organisation that provides training and advice for teachers and parents of pupils who have maths difficulties.
As Head of Maths at Emerson House and Head of Learning Support at Westminster Abbey Choir School, Rob worked alongside educators and with parents to create and deliver personalised intervention plans for pupils. Since leaving Emerson House, he has set up maths inset training and lesson support in a number of West London schools.
Rob is a member of The British Psychological Society, as a Certified Educational Assessor (including Access Arrangements CPT3A). He holds an OCR Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties from Helen Arkell. In December 2023, he was voted onto the Crested Council to represent issues about Dyscalculia and Maths Difficulties throughout specialist schools in this country. Rob is also co-author of The Maths Difficulties and Dyscalculia Assessment, being published by Jessica Kingsley in Spring of 2025. This is a unique test that not only collects information on scoring accuracy, but also looks into techniques and strategies used to tackle the important areas of foundation maths.
