Supporting autistic pupils in the classroom
The number of children and young people identified as autistic has increased significantly in recent years. Autistic individuals often display a range of inherent values, such as attention to detail, honesty, deep focus, passion, and resilience. These values can enrich school communities by fostering diversity and inclusion. But how can we ensure that appropriate support is provided in the classroom to enable autistic pupils to fulfil their potential?
Chris Bonnello is an autism advocate who shares both theoretical and practical insights into accommodating autistic children in classrooms. He draws on his professional experience as a teacher in both primary and special education, as well as his personal experience of an Asperger Syndrome diagnosis at the age of 25. Chris defines himself by his strengths rather than his weaknesses and encourages other autistic people to see their own strengths. His training outlines inclusive approaches that can accommodate all learners by default.

About the Creator
Chris Bonnello / Autistic Advocate, Speaker & Former Teacher, Autistic Not Weird
Chris Bonnello is an autistic advocate, author and former teacher (mainstream primary and special education). He is also a novelist, an award-winning writer, an international speaker on autism issues, and author of autisticnotweird.com.
Chris was first assessed for autism at the age of four. Despite a damning report into his deficiencies, he did not receive a diagnosis since he was deemed academically capable. At the age of ten, an educational psychologist reported him as having a “slightly odd personality”. Since his Asperger Syndrome diagnosis at the age of 25, he has turned his attitude around and defined himself by his strengths rather than his weaknesses, and encourages other autistic people to see their own strengths.
Having qualified as a teacher and worked in both primary and special education, Chris launched Autistic Not Weird to share his insights from both a personal and professional perspective. He now delivers talks internationally and has been nominated for six awards (winning four). He has also published a novel series, Underdogs – a dystopian war series whose heroes are students from a special school – recently releasing its fourth and final instalment. According to Chris, his personality remains slightly odd.

Katy Lawrence (verified owner) –
It was a good session with a focus on how autistic children persive the classroom environment and how we could support them better in mainstream schools. I would love to hear some more practical tools/ resources/ideas on supporting an autistic child on day to day basis.
Thank you

very informative,

Loved the personal insights and theoretical approach. However, as a teacher, I really needed practical, actionable things to do. Not all autistic kids are verbal or able to explain so how can we pose questions to them as you suggest?
