NASS Innovation Award:
Measuring Therapy Outcomes at Northern Counties School
The NASS Awards celebrate excellence in independent special schools. The Innovation Award recognises the use of new, adapted or innovative practice within a school to further improve the lives of children, young people, and/or their families, or the organisation as a whole.
Mollie and Zoe from the therapy team at Northern Counties School explain how the school has developed a groundbreaking tool to measure therapy outcomes for children with complex needs. Adapting the national Therapy Outcome Measures (TOMs), they created the Paediatric Learning Disability and Complex Needs MDT scale, designed for learners with profound disabilities, sensory needs, and communication challenges. Created with NHS teams, special schools, local authorities, and charities, it tracks changes in wellbeing, independence, and learning. This innovative tool supports families, guides therapy, and informs commissioners. Now published in the TOMs manual, it is embedded school-wide and gaining national recognition through conferences, training programmes, and professional publications.
