NASS Outstanding Impact Award:
The William Henry Smith Foundation Careers Service
The NASS Awards celebrate excellence in independent special schools. The Outstanding Impact Award recognises work that has profoundly impacted the outcomes for children and young people.
The team from the William Henry Smith Foundation explains how its innovative careers service delivers outstanding, tailored support for students with SEMH needs. Also hear from the students themselves how it has shaped their future plans. Aligned with all eight Gatsby Benchmarks, the programme empowers learners to imagine, experience and achieve meaningful futures. In 2024, every school leaver secured a post-16 placement – a 100% success rate reflecting the programme’s depth and impact.
Students engage in real-world roles, external placements, and diverse employer encounters – from palaeontologists to engineers and authors. Every opportunity is trauma-informed and sensory-aware, designed to build confidence, communication and independence. Innovation runs throughout the programme, with a bespoke tracking system to guide planning and progress. Governors lead mentoring and mock interviews and employer partnerships are adapted to SEMH needs. Embedded across the organisation, the service is driven by structure, creativity and belief in each learner’s potential.

About the Presenters
Karl Adamski / Head of School – William Henry Smith Foundation
The William Henry Smith Foundation brings together a School & Sixth Form, a Specialist College, and the Children’s Home, Boothroyd, forming a vibrant, multi-site community. It provides outstanding education, care, health, and therapy, all built on strong relationships and a trauma-informed approach. The team understands how past experiences shape a child’s emotional and behavioural responses. They create environments where safety, trust, and connection come first. They look beyond presenting behaviours, always asking ‘why’ and prioritise continuous learning, compassion, and meaningful connections. Committed to leading change and championing mental health, the Foundation promotes emotional well-being across all its settings. It works to enhance the quality of life for children, young adults, and their families, helping every young person reach their full potential.
